JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a two-round total of 3-under-par 573 and finished in fourth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club on Sunday. The tournament was played at the Arthur Hills-designed, 7,147-yard, par 72 Blackthorn Club.
Torrential rains in the Eastern Tennessee area played havoc during the weekend with the originally scheduled 54 holes of play. Play was suspended on both Friday and Saturday and the teams went back out on Sunday morning to finish the second round, but the course was deemed too wet to attempt to play the third and final round. The Hokies shot a 2-over 290 in the first round and followed that with a 5-under 283 in the second round.
Scott Vincent, a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, led the Hokies at Blackthorn Club. He shot a total of 3-under-par 141 and finished in a tie for eighth place. He finished seven strokes behind medalist Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest.
Senior Trevor Cone (Concord, North Carolina) tied for 12th place at 2-under 142 and junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) tied for 20th place at 1-under-par 143. Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) tied for 48th place at 148 and sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) tied for 67th place at 151. Sophomore Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) played the event as an individual and finished tied for 80th place at 157.
Wake Forest took home team honors, carding an 18-under-par 558, defeating host East Tennessee State by five strokes. Penn State finished third at 569, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Memphis was fifth at 574, Virginia was sixth at 576, Missouri was seventh at 577 and Coastal Carolina was eighth at 578.
