Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team travels to Jonesborough, Tennessee this weekend for the 17th Annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club. The tournament will be played at the 7,147-yard, par 72 Blackthorn Club.
Virginia Tech enters the event ranked 26th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Six teams in the field, led by No. 12 Wake Forest, are ranked in the top 50 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. The Hokies finished second in last year’s event and won the event in 2007.
Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play in the first position for the Hokies. He is ranked 43rd in the current World Amateur Golf Rankings. Vincent, Tech’s first-ever first-team All-American last season, is the defending champion at Blackthorn Club. He shot a tournament record-tying, 13-under, 203. He finished tied for 12th at Primland.
Trevor Cone will play in the second spot for Tech. The senior from Concord, North Carolina won two individual titles last season and is currently ranked 65th in the world and 40th collegiately. He was a third-team All-American a year ago. Cone has finished in the top 10 of all three events this season. He opened the season tying for eighth place at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, tied for third at VCU and tied for seventh at Primland. He was 14th at Blackthorn Club last season.
Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) will play in the third position for the Hokies. He has played in every event in his first two-plus seasons at Tech and was fourth on the team in scoring average and had five top-20 finishes last season. He has moved into the top 100 collegiately this season, at No. 93.
Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, is fourth for the Hokies. He played in seven events as a freshman, including the ACC Championship, the NCAA Auburn Regional and the NCAA Championship. He has started in each of the first three events of this season and tied for 34th at Primland.
Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) will play in the fifth position for the Hokies at Primland. Johnson made his season debut at VCU, tying for 23rd place, playing as an individual. He tied with Lane for 34th at Primland.
Sophomore Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) will play at Blackthorn Club as an individual. He played at both Olympia Fields and VCU this season for the Hokies.
The event, hosted by East Tennessee State, will be played at the Arthur Hills-designed course at Blackthorn Club. There will be a practice round on Thursday, followed by 18 holes of play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
