MEADOWS OF DAN, va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 25-under-par 839 and finished in fourth place at the inaugural Primland Collegiate Invitational. The event, hosted by Wake Forest, was played at the 7,053-yard, par 72 Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
The Hokies opened the tournament on Monday morning with a 3-under-par 285 and followed that with a 276 in Monday’s afternoon round. Tech was in fourth place entering Tuesday’s round and carded a 10-under-par 278 in the final round.
Senior Trevor Cone (Concord, North Carolina) posted a final round 3-under 69 and finished in a tie for seventh place at 10-under 206. He finished seven strokes behind medalist William Register of North Carolina.
Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 12th place at 8-under 208, after carding a 68 on Tuesday. Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) tied for 15th place at 210, after he posted the best round of the day for the Hokies, a 5-under 67. Sophomores Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) and Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) tied for 34th place at 218.
Host Wake Forest claimed the team title with a 38-under-par 826, one stroke better than Auburn. Penn State was third at 838, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Clemson was fifth at 843, Virginia was sixth at 845, North Carolina was seventh at 849, Tennessee was eighth at 852 and UNC Wilmington was ninth at 877.
The Hokies return to action on October 10-12, as they travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club.
