MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two-round total of 15-under-par 561 and is in fourth place entering the final round of the Primland Collegiate Invitational. The event, hosted by Wake Forest, is being played on the 7,053-yard, par 72 Highland Course at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
The Hokies were tied for sixth place after the first round Monday morning, posting a 3-under-par 285. Tech then went out and carded a 12-under-par 276 in the afternoon, the second-best round of the afternoon.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, is tied for fifth place with a two-round total of 7-under-par 137. He trails leader William Register of North Carolina by six strokes. Cone fired a 7-under-par 65 in the afternoon session, tied for the best round of the day. The 65 on Monday is Cone’s best-ever collegiate round.
Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 14th place at 4-under-par 140, after a 67 in the afternoon. Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) and sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) are tied for 23rd place at 1-under-par 143 and sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) is tied for 30th at even-par 144.
Host Wake Forest leads the tournament with a two-round total of 27-under-par 549, four stokes ahead of Auburn. Penn State is third at 558, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Tennessee is fifth at 565, North Carolina is sixth at 566, Virginia is seventh at 568, Clemson is eighth at 571 and UNC Wilmington is ninth at 593.
This is the inaugural year for the Primland Collegiate Invitational. The field includes six of the top 30 teams in the current Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, led by No. 10 Virginia and No. 12 Auburn. The tournament’s final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
