Tech aims to continue winning ways at Primland
Inaugural event attracts outstanding field

Blacksburg, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team, fresh off a victory at the Janney VCU Shootout on Tuesday, travels down the road to Meadows of Dan, Virginia, to compete in the inaugural Primland Collegiate Invitational. The event, hosted by Wake Forest, will be played at the 7,053-yard, par 72 Primland Resort.

Virginia Tech enters the event less than a week after earning its third-consecutive victory at the Janney VCU Shootout, at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. Tech led all three rounds and placed three players in the top seven overall, led by junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia), who posted a career-best second-place finish.

This will be the first year for the Primland Collegiate Invitational. A field that includes six of the top 30 teams in the current Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, led by No. 10 Virginia and No. 12 Auburn. Along with the host Demon Deacons (No. 21) and the Hokies (No. 29), the competing top 30 teams are North Carolina (No. 17) and Clemson (No. 24). Penn State, Tennessee and UNC Wilmington round out the competitive field.

Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play in the first position for the Hokies. He is ranked 27th in the current World Amateur Golf Rankings. Vincent set a new Virginia Tech record with three individual tournament titles last season and was the school’s first-ever first-team All-American last season. He finished tied for seventh at VCU.

Trevor Cone will play in the second spot for Tech. The senior from Concord, North Carolina won two individual titles last season and is currently ranked 67th in the world and 27th collegiately. He was a third-team All-American a year ago. Cone opened the season tying for eighth place at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational and tied for third last week at VCU.

Huge will play in the third position for the Hokies. He has played in every event in his first two-plus seasons at Tech and was fourth on the team in scoring average and had five top-20 finishes last season. He has moved into the top 200 collegiately, at No. 177.

Joey Lane, a sophomore from Great Falls, Virginia, played in seven events as a freshman, including the ACC Championship, the NCAA Auburn Regional and the NCAA Championship. He has started in each of the first two events of this season and tied for 37th at VCU.

Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) will play in the fifth position for the Hokies at Primland. Johnson made his season debut last week at VCU, tying for 23rd place, playing as an individual. He competed in three events last season as a freshman. The 23rd place showing at VCU was his collegiate-best finish.

The event will be played at the Donald Steel-designed Highland Course at the renowned Primland Resort. There will be a practice round on Sunday, followed by 36 holes of play on Monday. The final round will be held Tuesday morning. Live scoring available on Golfstat.com.
