Hokies three-peat at VCU
Maclain Huge posts best-ever finish in second place

Manakin-Sabot, Va. – Virginia Tech posted a three-round total of 1-over-par 865 to claim a third straight title in the Janney VCU Shootout on Tuesday afternoon. The event, hosted by VCU, was played on the 6,955-yard, par 72 Manakin Course at Hermitage.

Tech led all three rounds en route to the team title. The Hokies opened with a 1-under-par 287 in Monday’s morning round and followed that with a 4-over 292 in the second round in the afternoon round. Tech wrapped up the title by carding a 2-under 286 on Tuesday. With the victory, the Hokies become the first team to win the event three consecutive years.

Hokie junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) posted his best-ever collegiate finish in second place with a total of 2-under 214, one stroke behind medalist Nick Voke of Iowa State. Huge carded a 3-under 69 in the final round. He had four birdies and an eagle two on the par-4 333 yard No. 6 at the Manakin Course.

Senior Trevor Cone (Concord, North Carolina) tied for third place at 1-under-par 215 and fellow senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), the defending medalist in the event, tied for seventh place at 2-over 218. Sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) tied for 37th place at 227 and freshman Ian Hildebrand (Purcellville, Virginia) finished in 72nd place in his collegiate debut.

The other three members of the team played the event as individuals. Sophomore Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, North Carolina) finished tied for 23rd place at 224. Sophomore Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) tied for 77th at 241 and freshman Dan Woodbury (Upton, Massachussets) finished in 80th place in his collegiate debut.

The Hokies outdistanced runner-up Iowa State by six strokes and Maryland by seven strokes. Radford finished fourth at 882, host VCU was fifth at 884, UNCG was sixth at 889 and ODU finished seventh at 891. James Madison finished eighth at 893, Richmond was ninth at 897, Wichita State was 10th at 911, Division II power Francis Marion was 11th at 913, Xavier was 12th at 918 and George Mason was 13th at 933.

The Hokies return to action next Monday and Tuesday, as they compete in the inaugural Primland Invitational at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia. The event is hosted by Wake Forest.
