OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Virginia Tech posted a three-day total of 55-over-par 895 and finished in eighth place at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday. The tournament was played at the historic par 70, 7,290-yard Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois. The Hokies, the opening-round leader at 11-over 291, carded a 22-over 302 on Saturday and again posted a 302 in Sunday’s final round.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, carded at three-round total of 7-over-par 217 and finished in a tie for eighth place overall. He finished four strokes behind co-medalists Maverick McNealy of Stanford and Dylan Meyer of Illinois. Cone’s opening-round 68 on Friday was one of only six rounds under-par in the 75-player, 54-hole, tournament.
Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) finished in 35th place at 225 and sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) tied for 36th place at 226. Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 38th place at 227 and sophomore Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) tied for 71st place at 241.
Host Illinois claimed the team title with a three-round total of 861, 11 strokes ahead of Florida State. The Illini’s 3-under 277 was the only sub-par round of Sunday. Second round leader Baylor finished third at 876, Stanford was fourth at 882 and top-ranked Oklahoma State was fifth at 885. Texas finished sixth at 92, one stroke ahead of Colorado and three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Two-time defending national champion Alabama was ninth at 897, Oklahoma was 10th at 898 and Texas A&M was 11th at 900. Michigan finished in 12th place at 903, Arkansas was 13th at 905, Connecticut was 14th at 909 and Indiana finished 15th at 922.
This year’s tournament field was, perhaps, the strongest during the fall season of play. Co-number ones Alabama, the two-time defending national champion and defending tournament champion, and Oklahoma State headlined the field that included five of the top-seven teams in the nation and 10 of the top-25 teams in the preseason GCAA poll. The Hokies entered the event ranked No. 23 in the poll.
The Hokies return to action on September 22 and 23, when they look to defend their title in the VCU Shootout, to be played at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. Tech has won each of the last two VCU Shootouts and Vincent won medalist honors at last year’s event.
