OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Virginia Tech shot an 11-over-par 291 and is the opening round leader at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational, being played at the historic par 70, 7,290-yard Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Tech, ranked 23rd in the initial GCAA poll, has a two-stroke lead over fellow ACC member Florida State.
Trevor Cone, a senior from Concord, North Carolina, posted a 2-under 68 on Friday, and holds a one-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark of Oklahoma State. Cone recorded two birdies and no bogeys in his round and he and Clark were the only two players in the field to post scores of par-or-better in the first round.
Junior Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Virginia) and sophomore Joey Lane (Great Falls, Virginia) each carded 3-over 73 and are tied for 14th place. Senior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot 77 and is tied for 38th place and sophomore Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Virginia) posted an 80 and is tied for 64th place.
The Hokies lead FSU by two strokes and hold a three-stroke lead over host Illinois and Stanford. Top-ranked Oklahoma State is fifth at 295, Baylor is sixth at 297, Oklahoma is seventh at 299 and two-time defending national champion Alabama is eighth at 298. Arkansas is ninth at 301, Indiana is 10th at 303 and Michigan, Colorado and Texas A&M are tied for 11th at 304. Texas is 14th at 308 and Connecticut is 15th at 309.

This year’s tournament field is one of the strongest during the fall season of play. Co-number ones Alabama, the two-time defending national champion and defending tournament champion, and Oklahoma State headline the field that includes five of the top-seven teams in the nation and 10 of the top-25 teams in the preseason GCAA poll. The Hokies, No. 23 in the poll, are joined by No. 4 Texas, No. 6 Illinois, No. 7 Stanford, No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 17 Florida State, No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 21 Arkansas.
