HUTCHINSON, Kans. – Virginia Tech posted a three-round total of 36-over-par 876 and finished in 28th place at the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships on Monday afternoon. The event continues through Wednesday at the par 70, 6,941-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The Hokies finished with a final round 1-over-par 281 on Monday morning in the often weather-delayed event. Tech posted 294 in the first round and 301 in the second round. All three rounds were delayed due to weather and darkness.
Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) carded a three-round total of 1-under-par 209 and finished in a tie for 19th place. He finished five strokes behind Cameron Wilson of Stanford, who claimed the individual national championship with a score of 6-under-par 204. Wilson defeated Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech in a three-hole playoff to claim medalist honors.
Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) finished in a tie for 35th place at 1-over-par 211 and senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) finished tied for 141st place at 228. Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) finished in a tie for 152nd place at 234 and freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) finished in 154th place at 236. Cone and Vincent shot identical 3-under-par 67s in the final round for the Hokies.
The top eight teams following the 54 holes of stroke play advance to match play, which begins on Tuesday morning. Stanford holds the team lead entering the match play portion of the competition. The Cardinal was 13-under-par 827. They will be joined in match play by top national seed Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, UCLA, SMU and Illinois.
This was the Hokies’ second trip to the national championship in the last three years. The NCAA Committee was forced to alter the format of this year’s event due to the numerous suspensions in play, as the final 18 holes of individual stroke play was voided and the individual championship was awarded following 54 holes of stroke play.
