Hokies move up to fourth at NCAA regional

Auburn, Ala. – Virginia Tech has a two-round total of 16-over-par 592 and has improved to fourth place at the NCAA Auburn Regional on Friday afternoon. The event is being played at the par 72, 7,254-yard Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala.

The Hokies shot 13-over-par 301 on Thursday and was in 11th place, but carded a 3-over-par 291 in Friday’s second round to move up to fourth place. The 291 by the Hokies on Friday was tied for the second-best round of the day.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 2-under-par 70 on Friday and is tied for sixth place individually at 1-under-par 143. He trails co-leaders Kelby Burton of Kennesaw State and Cory Whitsett of Alabama by three strokes.

Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 16th place with a total of 3-over-par 147. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 30th place at 149 and freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) is tied for 46th place at 153. Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 71st place at 163.

Number-one national seed Alabama has taken a commanding lead in the tournament, with a two-round total of 5-under-par 571, 15 strokes ahead of host Auburn. Kennesaw State is third at 588, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Texas and BYU are tied for sixth at 593, UNCG is seventh at 594, Colorado is eighth at 595 and New Mexico is ninth at 597. Louisville is 10th at 602, Sam Houston State is 11th at 603, UC Davis is 12th at 604, Alabama State is 13th at 614 and St. John’s is 14th at 615.

The Hokies will tee off on Saturday morning at morning from the first tee, beginning at 7:50 a.m. Tech will be grouped with Texas and BYU.

The top five teams and the low individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, to be played May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kans.
