MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team recorded a three-round total of 23-under-par 841 and won the VCU Shootout on Tuesday afternoon, defending its 2012 title in the tournament. The event was played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin course at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.

The Hokies shot a 1-under-par 287 on Monday morning and trailed Iowa State by five strokes. In the afternoon session, the Hokies fired a 8-under-par 280 and surpassed the Cyclones to take a two-stroke lead. Tech then posted a 14-under-par 274 to nail down the 23-stroke victory.

The Hokies’ 22-stroke victory is the largest in the nine-year history of the VCU Shootout. Tech becomes the third team to win back-to-back team titles in the event. All four of the Hokies’ counters in the final round shot at least 2-under-par and the lone non-counter shot an impressive 1-over-par 73.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), who won last week’s Golfweek Conference Challenge in Iowa, won the VCU Shootout with a three-round total of 10-under-par 206. He defeated his teammate, senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.), by four strokes. Chalkley was second with a total of 6-under-par 210. Vincent posted sub-par rounds of 69-68-69=206 and Chalkley recorded sub-par rounds of 71-70-69=210.

Vincent’s back-to-back victories marks the first time a Virginia Tech golfer has won back-to-back events since current PGA Tour standout Brendon de Jonge, a fellow Zimbabwean, won the NCAA VCU East Regional Fall Preview and the ODU/Seascape Collegiate Invitational in the fall of 2000.

On Tuesday, Tech junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) posted the tournament’s low round, with a six-under-par 66. He finished in fourth place with a 4-under-par 212. His final round included seven birdies and one bogey.

Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) finished in a tie for 15th place at 217 and freshman Ryan Monday (Blacksburg, Va.) finished in a tie for 25th place at 220. This was Mondy’s collegiate debut.

Three Hokies competed in the event as individuals. Freshman Joey Lane (Great Falls, Va.) tied for 53rd place at 229 and freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) tied for 62nd place at 234. Junior Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) tied for 67th place at 237.

The Hokies defeated Iowa State by 22 strokes and Radford by 28 strokes. Richmond was fourth at 873, Old Dominion was fifth at 875, Maryland was sixth at 879 and host VCU was seventh at 880. UNC Greensboro was eighth at 883, James Madison was ninth at 891, George Mason was 10th at 914, Central Connecticut State was 11th at 926 and George Washington was 12th at 940.

Tech returns to action on Oct. 4-6, as they travel to Macon, Ga., to compete in the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside Golf Course.
