GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 21-under-par 843 and won the 44th Annual Furman Intercollegiate by 19 strokes. The event was played at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C., on Sunday. Tech led the tournament after each of the three rounds played.

This is the Hokies' third win of the 2012-13 season and this marks the fifth time that the Hokies have won the Furman Intercollegiate. Tech also posted victories at the Marshall Invitational and the VCU Shootout during the fall portion of the schedule.

Tech shot eight-under-par 280 in the first round on Friday and followed that with a two-under-par 286 on Saturday. On Sunday, the Hokies overcame rainy conditions and shot an 11-under-par 277, by far the low round of both Sunday and the tournament. The 277 was the only sub-par round of Sunday's final round. Four of the five competing Hokies finished in the top 10 of the event.

Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a three-round total of six-under-par 210 and finished in third place overall. He finished one stroke behind co-champions Scott Fernandez of Iowa State and Drew Aimone of Samford. Moyers carded six birdies and one bogey to shoot a final-round five-under-par 67.

Junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for fourth place overall with a three-under-par 213 and sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for seventh place at 214. Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.), who led after each of the first two rounds, tied for 10th place at 215 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 28th place at 221.

The Hokies posted four rounds of par-or-better in the final round, led by Moyers' five-under-par 67. Moyers and Chalkley each carded scores of par-or-better in all three rounds. For the tournament, the Hokie players were par-or-better in 11 of the combined 15 rounds.

Tech had three individuals competing in this event. Due to weather problems on Sunday, all three did not compete in the final round. Entering Sunday's final round, sophomore Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) was tied for 67th place at 152, redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was tied for 100th at 156 and redshirt junior Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) was tied for 117th place at 160.

The Hokies' 843 was 19 strokes better than runner-up North Florida, which entered the tournament ranked No. 17 by Golfstat.com. Troy was third at 873, Samford was fourth at 877, Iowa State was fifth at 879, Western Carolina was sixth at 880 and Chattanooga was seventh at 881. Georgia State was eighth at 885, Gardner-Webb was ninth at 886, Purdue was 10th at 888 and East Tennessee State and Winthrop were tied for 11th at 889. Charleston Southern was 13th at 891 and Akron finished 14th at 898. Seven more teams also competed in the event, all with scores of 900-or-higher.

The Hokies return to action on April 6-7, as they compete in the Insperity/Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
