Hokies maintain lead at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team has a two-round total of 10-under-par 566 and has maintained their four stroke lead over North Florida at the 44th Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday.

Tech shot eight-under-par 280 in the first round on Friday and followed that with a two-under-par 286 on Saturday. The Hokies and the Ospreys, ranked 17th in the Golfstat.com poll, are the ony two schools to break par in both of the first two rounds.

Sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) has a two-round total of seven-under-par 137 and is tied for the lead with Scott Fernandez of Iowa State. Cone followed his four-under-par 68 from Friday with a three-under-par 69 on Saturday.

Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is in seventh place at three-under-par 141 and senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 10th at 143. Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 20th place at 145 and freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 67th at 152. Led by Cone's 69, all five Hokies in the starting line-up shot 73 or better on Saturday.

Tech has three individuals competing in this event. Sophomore Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) is also tied for 67th place at 152, redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is tied for 100th at 156 and redshirt junior Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 117th place at 160.

The Hokies' 566 is four strokes ahead of North Florida and 10 strokes ahead of Western Carolina. Troy is fourth at 579, Winthrop and Iowa State are tied for fifth at 582, Purdue is seventh at 583 and Chattanooga is eighth at 584. Samford is ninth at 586, Georgia State and Gardner-Webb are tied for 10th at 590, Akron is 13th at 592 and Charleston Southern is 14th at 594. Seven more teams are also competing in the event, all with scores of 600-or-higher..
