Hokies tied for 27th entering final round on stroke play

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Virginia Tech golf team has a two-day total of 33-over-par 601 and is tied for 27th place entering the final round of stroke play at the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. The tournament is being played at the 7,292-yard, par-71 Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Ca.

The Hokies shot 299 in Tuesday’s opening round and followed that with 302 on Wednesday. Tech is tied with Memphis for 27th place.

Freshman Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) is low man for the Hokies. He is tied for 59th place at six-over-par 148. Thomas Pieters of Illinois holds the lead at five-under-par 137.

Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 84th at 150 and freshman Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 104th at 152. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 124th at 154.

The Hokies finished the round with just four players, as junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) became ill and withdrew after nine holes. His availability for the final round of stroke play will not be known until Thursday morning.’’

Alabama holds the lead after two rounds at four-over-par 572, four strokes ahead of UCLA. Florida State is third at 580 and Oklahoma and North Florida are tied for fourth at 581. Washington is sixth at 582, Liberty is seventh at 583 and five teams, California, Kent State, Florida, host USC and Illinois are all tied for eighth at 584. The top eight teams after tomorrow’s third round will advance to match play.

The Hokies will tee off beginning at 7 a.m. from the No. 10 tee on Thursday morning. They will once again be grouped with Lamar and Tulsa.
