NEW LONDON, N.C. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round two-over-par 290 and is tied with Maryland for seventh place at the 57th annual ACC Men’s Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. on Friday afternoon.

Three Hokies, juniors Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) and Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.), along with sophomore Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) all shot even-par 72 and are tied for 20th place. Adam Long of Duke leads the tournament after shooting a seven-under-par 65 in the first round, one stroke ahead of defending co-medalist, Matt Hill of NC State. Hokie freshman Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 31st with a two-over-par 74 and junior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) is tied for 52nd at 79.

Defending champion Georgia Tech holds the lead after the first round with a nine-under-par 279, one stroke ahead of Duke and Wake Forest. Clemson is fourth at 284, Virginia is fifth at 286 and NC State is sixth at 287, three strokes ahead of the Hokies and Terps. Florida State is ninth at 293, North Carolina is 10th at 297 and Boston College is 11th at 301.

The Hokies tied for seventh last year at the ACC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Southwest Regional in Austin, Tex. The second round will be played Saturday and the final round will be played Sunday.
