Bryce Chalkley shot an opening round one-under-par 70 and is tied for 12th place at the 2013 State Open of Virginia on Thursday afternoon. The tournament is being played at the par 71, 7,026 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va.
Chalkley, a rising senior from Richmond, Va., made four birdies and three bogeys in the first round. He finished the day by making birdie on the 17th and 18th holes. He trails co-leaders Mike Gooden and Jay Woodson by five strokes.
Mikey Moyers, who completed his collegiate eligibility this spring is just one stroke back of former teammate Chalkley. Moyers, from Stanardsville, Va., fought back from a bogey-double bogey start to finish at even par 71. He also birdied No. 18 and is in tied for 23rd place.
Incoming freshman Joey Lane and former Hokie golfer Aaron Eckstein each shot five-over-par 76 in the first round.
