The Notebook

Hokie golfer Bryce Chalkley shot an opening round even-par 70 and is tied for fourth place at the 100th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship being conducted at The Homestead’s Cascades Course.

Chalkley, a rising senior from Richmond, Va., birdied three-of-his-last-four holes en route to his 70. He shot a three-under-par 32 on the front nine, his second nine holes on Tuesday. He trails co-leaders Pat Tallent, Vincent Nadeau and Matt Brantingham by one stroke.

Mikey Moyers, who completed his Hokie career this spring, is tied for 13th place after a first round two-over-par 72. Aaron Eckstein, who completed his Virginia Tech career in 2011, is tied for 58th place with a 78.

The field of 120 competitors will play 36 holes of stroke play to determine the low 32 players for match play. The championship match will be competed over 36 holes.
