At noon on Tuesday, the Hokies will begin the long trek back East. First stop Wichita, then Atlanta, Charlotte and finally, late tonight, Blacksburg. Before the team gets in the vans and heads southeast on Kansas 96, they will have a brief meeting to get the logistics of the day and the coming days in order.
Although the team did not advance to match play, this has been a good trip to Kansas. They played a top-level course, made some new friends and represented the University well. Two Hokies posted top 40 finishes, which, in a non-weather-effected national championship, would have placed both Trevor Cone and Scott Vincent into the individual final round.
This will be the final trip for Bryce Chalkley as a member of the Virginia Tech golf team. The senior captain has meant a lot to this program and will be missed in the future. But we’ll still see Bryce. He will return to campus in the fall to complete his double major. Always a dedicated student, Bryce set a great example to his teammates, both on and off the course. Look for him on August 30 in Lane Stadium, rooting on the Hokie football team. He’s looking forward to that.
We’ll post a final blog on Wednesday, as we will say all of our thank yous and goodbyes, but we would be remiss without thanking the fine folks out at Prairie Dunes. Gracious hosts, the members and staff did a great job running a top-level event through difficulty, at best, weather issues.
Hutchinson was a good host city. The Fairfield Inn is a nice, new property and its staff has gone out of their way to make the Hokies and all the teams here welcome. We were able to find a few good restaurants and the Kansas Cosmosphere was everything it was built up to be and even more. As a matter of face, the players went to the IMAX theatre in the center to watch a movie last night.
Well, here’s hoping for good weather conditions between here and campus. We’ll wrap this up tomorrow. In the mean time, follow us on Twitter at @VT_MGolf. If something interesting pops up today, we’ll post it there.
