The What's Happening Blog

It’s just after 2:30 p.m. CT and now may be a good time to update Hokie fans on what’s happening in Hutchinson. After a 5 hour and 40 minute weather delay, the teams are now back on the course.

The rain has stopped here at the hotel, so the team and coaches have headed over to Prairie Dunes to get in some work on the practice range. The forecast is still a little iffy this afternoon, but the NCAA is hoping to get Tech out on the course beginning at 6:50 p.m. CT. If so, that would give the Hokies a little less than two hours to play as many holes as possible before darkness arrives. That darkness may come a little earlier that expected, if the skies remain overcast.

Even under the best scenarios, there is no way for any of the afternoon wave of teams to complete their first rounds on Friday. The way the NCAA runs this tournament, the top 15 teams play the afternoon wave in the first round and then the morning wave in the second round, so all of the top-seeded teams are in the same boat, no pun intended.

The NCAA is trying to get as many holes played as possible today, to give them as many options as possible moving forward. Weather is always an issue with this event. The committee will try as best they can to complete the original format if possible. If not possible, then other scenarios could come into play. But it’s too early to get to that quite yet.

After the team practice at the club, they will return to the hotel to change clothes and get ready for their tee time. We will keep you posted as we get more information, especially on the Twitter feed, @VT_MGolf.
