Shortly after 7 p.m. CT, a road-weary Virginia Tech golf team arrived in Hutchinson, Kansas, after traveling all day to reach the site of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.

The day started with a 6:15 a.m., departure from the Virginia Tech Golf Course, heading to Charlotte, where the Hokies took a flight to Chicago and then on to Wichita, before the hour drive into Hutchinson.

It’s always good when traveling with any team, especially a sport so dependent on its equipment, like golf, to here the words “We have all the bags.” With making connections and changing airlines in Chicago as did the Hokies today, nothing makes a golf coach more nervous that whether or nor the clubs made it half-way across the country in one piece. So, when senior captain Bryce Chalkley uttered those words, all was good with the travel.

To say the weather is a little different here might be an understatement. Tech was greeted to 97-degree temperatures in Wichita, with a fair amount of humidity. Certainly not the unseasonable cool climes of Auburn, Alabama.

The team checked into the hotel, a nice, new Fairfield Inn, and then headed over to the Olive Garden for a nice meal. We’ll better explore the local cuisine later in the week, tonight; it was good to have the familiar.

The team will sleep in a little in the morning, and then head back down the road to Wichita, where they have been invited to play a nice, private club in the city of almost 400,000 residents. Most of the teams in the competition will do likewise, as the host course, Prairie Dunes Country Club, is off limits until Thursday’s practice rounds.

We will blog a few times on Wednesday, maybe giving the readers a little more information on our host city and the host course that many say is one of the finest in the country. Until then, have a great night and Go Hokies!
