Steve Roccaforte elevated to Associate Head Coach
New title better reflects contributions to program
May 18, 2017
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach Buzz Williams has announced the promotion of Steve Roccaforte to associate head coach.
Roccaforte just completed his third season as an assistant coach with the program. He has nearly 30 years of Division I basketball coaching experience, including time as the head coach at Lamar University (2006-10). Known as one of the top recruiters in college basketball, Roccaforte has been instrumental in the growth of the Virginia Tech program as a whole and in the successes of the recruiting classes. This year’s recruiting class is a consensus top 25 class.
"Rock has been here from the start of our tenure, and as our program has continued to mature and evolve, one of his biggest responsibilities within our organization has been to be a conduit to everyone on our staff,” Williams said. “As time has transpired, along with many other roles, that role has become the most important and this is why this title change has become necessary.
“He is the best teammate I have ever been around, and as a former head coach, his willingness to share his wisdom with everyone in our program has been invaluable. This is only the second time in my career I have had this position on my staff, and I anticipate it will have the same result as it did the first time, leading to a head coaching opportunity for him. His resume speaks for itself and if we can continue to progress, his time with us will be limited as he accepts his next head coaching opportunity."
With the Hokies, Roccaforte is involved in all aspects of the program. His familiarity with Williams and Virginia Tech’s program allows for great input in recruiting, strategy, evaluation and player development. His experience as a former head coach is invaluable to all manner of the Hokies’ program.
Over the years, Roccaforte has coached and recruited a large number of future NBA and professional players. During his time at Lamar, not only did the Cardinals have on-court success, but they also boasted a top 20 national APR. Roccaforte earned his bachelor of applied arts and sciences degree from Lamar in 1989.
