WASHINGTON, D.C. – Virginia Tech lost to No. 11 Miami, 88-82, in the quarterfinal of the 2016 New York Life ACC Tournament at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night.
The Hokies, the tournament’s sixth seed, is 19-14 overall, after finishing 10-8 in ACC regular season play. Miami, the third seed in the event improve to 25-6 overall and will advance to play No. 4 Virginia on Friday night in the tournament semifinal.
The Hokies trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, but when Kerry Blackshear Jr., made a pair of free throws with 1:14 remaining in the half, Tech trailed just 33-32 at the intermission. Tech took an early lead in the second half, but Miami went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 50-38 lead with 15:07 remaining. After the Hurricanes stretched the lead to as many as 15 points, Tech made a final run to cut the deficit to 76-70 with 1:19 to play, but could get no closer and Miami held on for the 88-82 final.
Seth Allen scored 31 points to lead all scorers. He made 17 of 18 free throw attempts, tying an ACC Tournament record for most free throws made, tying the mark of 17 set by Charlie Scott of North Carolina against Virginia in the 1970 quarterfinal. Jalen Hudson and Zach LeDay added 12 points each for Tech. Sheldon McClellan scored 21 points to lead five Hurricanes in double figures.
Tech out rebounded the Hurricanes, 28-23 and made 28-of-31 from the free throw line. The Hokies shot 49.1 percent from the field, including 51.7 percent in the second half, but the Canes shot 56.6 percent from the field in the contest.
