Hokies defeat Florida State, 96-85, in ACC Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Virginia Tech defeated Florida State, 96-85, in the second round of the 2016 New York Life ACC Tournament in the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

The Hokies, the tournament’s sixth seed, extended their winning streak to six games with the win. Tech is now 19-13 overall, after finishing the ACC regular season, 10-8. The Seminoles, seeded 11th in the event, fall to 19-13 overall.

Tech jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the contest. Zach LeDay opened the scoring with a three-pointer and Tech took an 11-point lead, 30-19, with 7:39 remaining on a bucket by Seth Allen on an assist from Chris Clarke. After FSU’s Devin Bookert hit a long three at the buzzer, Tech took a 45-38 lead into the locker room.

The second half started like the first half, only this time the three-pointer was from Justin Bibbs. After Tech pushed the lead to 10 points with 17:31 remaining on a three-pointer fro Jalen Hudson, the Seminoles were able to cut the deficit to five points with 12:45 remaining. Following the under-12 minute media time out, Tech went on a 15-4 run over the next four-plus minutes and when Bibbs hit the fourth of his team-high four three-pointers, Tech led 77-60 and FSU never got closer than nine points.

Allen led all scorers with 20 points off the bench for the Hokies. Justin Robinson scored a career-high 18 points, Bibbs had 16 points and LeDay recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. LeDay also had career-highs with five assists and five blocked shots. Bookert led five Seminoles in double figures with 19 points.

Tech shot 53.7 percent from the floor, including a blistering 60.0 percent in the first half. Tech also made 30-of-37 free throws, shooting 81.1 percent from the line. Tech turned the ball over just nine times and assisted on 18 of its 29 baskets.

The Hokies advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday night, as they take on third-seed Miami. The game will tip-off after 9 p.m., and will be televised by both The ACC Network and ESPN.
