CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -– Virginia broke open a close game in the final seven minutes and defeated Virginia Tech, 69-57, in John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday afternoon in ACC men’s basketball action.
The Hokies jumped out to an early lead, up 11-4 with 13:34 remaining in the first half and kept the game close the rest of the half, as Virginia took a 28-24 lead into the intermission. In the second half, the Cavaliers opened a 13-point lead with less than 12 minutes remaining, but Tech fought back and cut the score to 50-46 on a pair of Satchel Pierce free throws with 7:32 remaining. Virginia then ended the game on a 19-11 run to secure the 69-57 victory.
Adam Smith once again led the Hokies with 19 points, going four-of-seven from three-point range. He was joined in double-figures by Ahmed Hill, who added 10 points for the Hokies. Malik Müller scored nine points and dished out three assists. Müller made all three of his three-point attempts in the game. With his 19 points, Smith extends his double-figure scoring streak to 11 consecutive games.
Malcolm Brogdon led four Cavaliers in double-figures with 19 points, while Darion Atkins and Anthony Gill added 16 points each for the Cavaliers. London Perrantes added 11 points and six assists for Virginia.
The Hokies won the battle of the boards, 31-29 and committed just eight turnovers in the contest. The Cavaliers shot 51.1 percent from the field, including 61.5 percent in the second half. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc, as the Hokies were nine-of-19, for 47.4 percent, while UVa made six-of-13 attempts, good for 46.2 percent.
The Hokies are now 10-19 overall and 2-14 in ACC action, while the second-ranked Cavaliers improve to 27-1 overall and 15-1 in league play. Tech will return to Cassell Coliseum to end the regular season with a pair of games this coming week. The Hokies will host Boston College at 9 p.m. on Monday night and then celebrate Senior Day next Saturday at noon against Miami.
