ATLANTA – For the second straight game, Joey van Zegeren led the offensive charge, but it again wasn’t enough as the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team fell at Georgia Tech, 62-51, in the final regular season game Saturday afternoon at the McCamish Pavilion. van Zegeren led the Hokies with a career-high 21 points, also adding seven rebounds, while Georgia Tech was paced by Robert Carter, Jr., as he finished with 16 points.
Both teams got out to a slow start, barely hitting double figures by the under-12 media timeout. Tech (9-21, 2-16 ACC) took its first lead since the opening minutes with just under nine to go in the first half. Marshall Wood laid one in to tie it and Devin Wilson capitalized on a missed three by Trae Golden to put Tech ahead, 14-12.
Play went back-and-forth as both teams traded leads until Golden hit a three with four minutes left and the Yellow Jackets (15-16, 6-12 ACC) closed out the half on a 14-4 run to take a 29-22 lead into the break.
van Zegeren had 10 points by the half and opened the second half with a strong put-back of a missed shot by Wilson. He scored 12 straight points for the Hokies, beginning before the halftime break and continuing until there was nearly 12 minutes left in the game.
Georgia Tech began the second half with nearly the same run they closed it with, this time it was 13-4, which helped it extend its lead to as many as 19 points. The Hokies worked their way back into it, getting within eight points, with under five to play, but Georgia Tech closed out with a double-digit lead.
Wilson finishes with six points and five assists for the Hokies, who shot just 37-percent in the game. Daniel Miller and Golden added 14 points each for the Yellow Jackets.
The Hokies will head to Greensboro, N.C., next week for the ACC Tournament. Tech will face Miami on Wednesday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets for Wednesday’s ACC Tournament Opening Day are $35 each and include all three games.Seating is general admission.
