COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A second-half surge for the Maryland Terrapins lifted them past the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team 64-47 on Tuesday evening at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md. The Hokies' Joey van Zegeren set a career high, as he and senior Jarell Eddie paced Tech with 14 points apiece. The pair also added nine and five rebounds, respectively. Jake Layman led the Terps with 13 points and five rebounds.

The game got off to a slow start, as neither team scored in the opening two minutes of action. After keeping it within 4 to begin the game, Tech's C.J. Barksdale kicked off what would be a 14-4 run with a three-point play at the 12-minute media timeout. A 3-pointer from Eddie tied things at 15, and Tech took its first lead of the game on a pair of Marshall Wood free throws.

Dez Wells broke up the run with two free throws of his own, and Layman buried one of his four 3-pointers to get the Terps back to within one with less than six minutes to go in the first half. Tech went back up by five in the closing minutes of the half, but Maryland rallied late, and a Nick Faust dunk capitalized on a late Tech turnover and made it a 29-28 lead in the Hokies’ favor at the half.

Tech out-rebounded Maryland 21-11 in the first half, but its seven first-half turnovers and Maryland’s nine points off of them kept things close.

Maryland scored six straight points to open the second half and keep the momentum in its favor. After opening the second half with a three-point play by Wells, the Terps made five 3's on their next scoring possessions to get out to a double-digit lead.

After a layup by van Zegeren got Tech to within eight with less than nine minutes to play, the Hokies never saw a single-digit difference again, and Maryland led by as many as 20 in the second half. The Hokies committed a costly 17 turnovers in the game, and Maryland got 18 points off Tech’s mistakes. Tech kept the rebounding advantage, 40-30.

Freshman Trevor Thompson added six points and 10 boards for the Hokies, while Wells finished with 11 points for Maryland.

Tech returns to action on Saturday, as it travels to Georgia Tech for a 2 p.m. game on ESPN2 to close the regular season.
