Hokies host Rhode Island Rams in Cassell
Tech to play second game in three days

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech Hokies will play their second game in three days to open the season, as they host the Rams from the University of Rhode Island. Game time is 7 p.m. and the game will be shown on ESPN3.

About Tonight’s Game

The Hokies are 1-0 on the season after defeating ETSU on Saturday, 80-62.

Rhode Island is 0-1 on the season after losing to Norfolk State, 67-55, on Friday.

Rhode Island leads the all-time series, 6-5.

Virginia Tech 80, ETSU 62

Erick Green scored 21 points to lead the Hokies to an 80-62 win over ETSU on Saturday afternoon in the head coaching debut for James Johnson.

Jarell Eddie added 17 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double and Robert Brown scored 16 points for the Hokies.

The New Boss

This season marks the head coaching debut of James Johnson.

Johnson took over the Virginia Tech program on May 1, 2012.

Johnson earned his first head coaching victory with an 80-62 win over ETSU on Saturday.

Near a Milestone

Erick Green enters tonight’s game with 962 career points.

He needs 38 points to become the 43rd person in school history to record 1,000 career points.

No Time for Rest

Tech will play two games in the first three days of the season and three in the first five days.

Player Notes

Erick Green is third among returning scorers in the ACC this season.

Robert Brown missed 12 weeks during the off-season following surgery on a fractured left foot.

Will Johnston and Joey Racer were named to the 56th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, recognizing academic excellence by student-athletes during the 2011-12 academic year.

Marquis Rankin missed the season-opening win over ETSU due to family concerns. His status for tonight’s game is undetermined at this point.
