Hokies travel to Liberty Wednesday

BLACKSBURG- The 20th ranked Virginia Tech lacrosse team travels to Lynchburg, Virginia for a 4 p.m. tilt against the Liberty Flames on Wednesday. It is the team’s first road contest of the year after starting 3-1 at home.

The Hokies
Tech entered the Inside Lacrosse Poll at No. 20 on Monday. It is the team’s first ranking since March of 2011. The Hokies come into the game after knocking off No. 17 Boston College 18-12 at home on Saturday. It was the Hokies’ first ACC win since 2012.

On Saturday the team used a six goal run to erase a first half deficit and take the lead early in the second period. Tristan McGinley was huge in the attack, scoring four times and winning 11 draws for the team. Kristine Loscalzo also added four goals and Emma Harden and Taylor Caskey each had three goals off the bench to lead the way for the Hokies.

On the season, the team is averaging 14.50 goals per game, an increase from last season’s 8.72 output. McGinley, this week’s Alpha Lacrosse Player of the Week has been excellent so far for the Hokies. She is second in the ACC at 3.75 goals per game, third in points per game (4.75) and third in draw controls per game with 9.00.

The Flames
Liberty comes into the game with a 1-2 record and 0-1 in Big South Conference play. Last time out on Saturday, they fell to Richmond 18-7.

Brianna McCaffrey is the leading goal scorer for the Flames, scoring five times through the first three games. Aubria Tarris has made nine saves on 49 shots faced on the season in goal.

The Series
Virginia Tech is 6-0 against Liberty all-time including 3-0 in games played in Lynchburg. In last season’s contest in Blacksburg, the Hokies won 7-4. Former Hokie Jessi Thon led the team with three goals and an assist, while Tristan McGinley added two goals and one assist.

Next up: The Hokies return home on Saturday Feb. 25 to face two out of conference opponents. At 1 p.m. the team plays against Old Dominion, and at 7 p.m. the team plays Radford. Both games will be at the Indoor Practice Facility.
