BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team had its way with Gardner-Webb, trouncing the Runnin’ Bulldogs 20-1 at Moseley Field on Sunday afternoon. Fourteen players scored for the Hokies, led by Tara Feehan’s hat trick. Emma Rose was the lone scorer for the Bulldogs.
Emma Harden got things going for the Hokies (4-3) when she put away a free position goal 23 seconds into the game. Tech tacked on seven more goals in the opening ten minutes of play to go up 8-0. Seven different players scored in that span and four of the scores came from the 8-meter.
Tech slowed its pace after the first ten minutes, but continued to roll. Megan Will created her own opportunities for back-to-back goals, and Laney Clarke followed that up with the first goal of her career.
Meghan Macera took the ball straight to goal after a save by Tech goalie Meagh Graham, and Rachel Skay added her first score of the season to up the Hokies’ total. Tech switched out goalies following the Skay goal and Hannah Sieger would remain in cage for the rest of the game.
The Hokies were up 14-0 at the break and out shot Gardner-Webb (0-4) 20-2 in the first half.
The momentum continued in the second half for the Hokies as Feehan struck just over a minute into the new period for the first goal of her young career. The Hokies were holding on to the shutout until Rose was able to break it with 3:22 left in the game. The Bulldogs opted not to shoot on a free position attempt and brought the ball around the back of cage. Rose attacked from the left side and found the back of the goal.
Graham got the start for the Hokies and played the first 19 minutes, making one save. Siger logged the remaining 41 minutes and stopped two shots. Gardner-Webb alternated goalies through the game as starting goalie Raygan Hall played 37 minutes and allowed 14 goals. Amy Schmitt allowed six goals in her 23 minutes of action and the pair split the four saves.
Maddie Doan and Kelly Glatthorn made their first starts against the Bulldogs, as every available Tech player saw field time. Five Hokies scored their first career goals in the game, and six players off the bench tallied two-or-more points.
The outcome is as close as Tech has been to shutting out its opponent since holding St. Bonaventure to just one goal during the 2000 season. The Hokies won the road game 19-1. Tech has never shut out its opponent.
The Hokies return to the field and begin ACC play on Friday, March 6 as they travel to Durham, North Carolina to take on nationally-ranked Duke at 5 p.m.
