Scouting Maryland

Maryland captured the regular season ACC title, finishing with a 16-1 record, 6-1 in league play.

The Terps’ attack has been led this season by Kelly McPartland, Brooke Griffin and Taylor Cummings, who have each scored 44 goals. McPartland adds a team-best 25 assists, while Cummings also paces the team on defense with 83 draws, 23 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers.

Abbey Clipp has been the go-to in cage for Maryland, boasting a 14-0 record and .447 save percentage, as well as an 8.33 GAA. She made three saves and allowed six goals in last weekend’s matchup.

Hokie Notes

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps and junior Megan Will combined to score 12 of Tech’s 24 goals during the final week of the regular season and have tallied hat tricks in each of the team’s last three games.

-- Tech’s 12 goals at Maryland was the most goals scored on the Terps in a victory this season and nearly doubled their 7.69 then-average.

-- Junior Meg Bartley set a new career and team season high against Liberty, scoring six goals in the win.

-- Junior Megan Will broke onto Tech’s all-time scoring list with four goals against Coastal Carolina and the points list with three goals at No. 1 North Carolina. She scored the 100th goal of her career at Old Dominion.

-- Junior Cawley Bromley had a career game at William & Mary, scoring three goals and finishing with four points and made it back-to-back four-point games against Coastal.

-- Against No. 6 Duke, the Hokie defense forced the Blue Devils into a season-high 18 turnovers with their average of 10 coming in the first half, also holding them to a season-low four first-half goals.

-- Entering the week, two Hokies rank among the top 30 in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley ranks the highest of the group, sitting at 14th in the country averaging 5.00 draws per game.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps set a career high with five goals and seven points in the season opener at James Madison.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps became the second Hokie on the 2014 roster to rank among the all-time best as her three assists against High Point broke her onto the list.

-- Seniors Julia Heaps, Kelly Naslonski, Lindsay Roche and Becca Niles captain the Hokies.

Last Time Out

The Hokies wrapped up the regular season last week with No. 15 Virginia and No. 2 Maryland. In its final home game of the 2014 season, Tech fell to the Cavaliers 17-12. Julia Heaps, Megan Will and Meg Bartley each tallied hat tricks in the game to lead the Tech offense. The Hokies held an early lead in the game, but a six-goal run for Virginia in the latter part of the first half created a distance they would never be able to get back.

In the final game of the regular season, Tech hit the road to face the No. 2 Terps. The Hokies kept it close early, but Maryland’s steady scoring was eventually too much. The 12 goals scored by Tech was the most Maryland has allowed in a win this season, and the Hokies neared the Terps’ average of 7.69 with six first-half scores.

Record Watch

Junior Meg Bartley has already broken into the all-time top 10, and is second with 192 career draws. She has also made her second notch on the single-seasons draw list, ranking second with 69 last year. She is on pace this season to set a new all-time single season record.

Redshirt senior Julia Heaps broke into the all-time assists list against High Point earlier this year. She currently ranks sixth all-time with 43.

Junior Megan Will’s 45 goals so far this season notches her second mark on the single-season scoring list, ranking sixth. She broke into the all-time career scoring list against Coastal Carolina and is currently tied for fifth all-time with 117 career goals and and sixth with 153 career points. Will needs just one asssit to crack the top-10.
