COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team fell in its regular season finale, 22-12, at No. 2 Maryland Saturday afternoon. Julia Heaps and Megan Will helped lead the Tech offense with three goals each, while Beth Glaros paced the Terps with five goals.

The Hokies (7-9, 0-7 ACC) kept things close to start the game, matching an early Maryland (16-1, 6-1 ACC) goal a minute and a half later as Will attacked the left side to tie things up. The Terps responded with three straight goals, but Meg Bartley broke up the run when she fired in a high shot from the right side to make it 4-2.

Another three-goal surge helped Maryland create some distance, but this time it was Meghan Macera that disrupted things for the Terps. After attempting to attack middle she brought it back out and created a better look on the left side for the goal. Kelly Naslonski tacked on another for the Hokies on a pass from Jessi Thon to make it 8-4 with 13 minutes remaining.

Maryland put together its third string of three goals in the first half to continue to pull away from the Hokies as the game neared halftime. Will buried a late goal for Tech in attempt to steal some momentum, but Kelly McPartland added a free position goal to put Maryland up 13-6 at the break.

Tech was outshot 16-10 in the first half, but its six goals already neared the 7.69 team goals against average of the Terps.

Maryland neared a ten-goal lead as the second half began, putting away two goals in the opening eight minutes of the new half, but the Hokies refused to back down. It was Will again the would strike first for Tech as she put away a quick goal after the Hokies won the draw, and Heaps tacked on another less than a minute later.

It seemed Maryland would halt the Hokies’ production, but an Erin Collins goal was called back when her stick was deemed illegal and Tech continued it’s charge. Naslonski teamed up with Macera and Thon attacked the right side to make it four straight Hokie goals.

Glaros eventually ended Tech’s drive on offense when she sparked what would be a six-goal stint that got the Terps over the 10-goal difference and ran the clock. Bartley and Heaps would each add goals for the Hokies late, but Tech was unable to counter the Maryland attack.

Bartley finished with two goals and won six draws in the game, but Maryland’s Taylor Cummings came up with nine, while adding three points for her team.

Meagh Graham got the start in cage and the decision for the Hokies but saw just 17 minutes of action. She allowed eight goals and made just one save. Hannah Sieger logged the remaining 43 minutes on goals and made six saves. Abbey Clip earned the win for the Terps, playing the entire first half. She was replaced by Emily Kift in the second half. Both players tallied identical numbers, making three saves and allowing six goals.

Tech will travel to Boston next week for the ACC Tournament. Play will begin Thursday with four first-round games. The league will release the official bracket following the final regular season game later today. Check back at hokiesports.com for all the tournament details.
