Tech wraps up home play with No. 15 Cavaliers
Hokies look to bounce back against their in-state rival

Notes: This marks the 20th all-time match up between the Hokies and ‘Hoos ... Tech fell at Virginia last season, 10-5, but claimed its only win in the series at home in 2012, topping the No. 7 Cavaliers 10-9 in overtime ... The two schools have met once in the post season, and Virginia has been ranked in all but three all-time meetings.

Scouting Virginia

Virginia enters its final conference game of the season with an 8-7 record on the year, sitting at 2-4 in league play. The Cavaliers recently ended a four-game winning streak over the weekend, falling 13-8 at No. 2 Maryland. Prior to the loss, Virginia logged a pair of top-10 ACC victories in its winning streak as it knocked off Notre Dame on the road and Boston College at home.

Courtney Swan leads the ‘Hoos this season with 41 goals and 18 assists on the year. Liza Blue isn’t far behind with 41 goals, while also winning 40 draws.

Lauren Goerz has helped pace the defensive efforts, causing 14 turnovers and grabbing 26 ground balls this year. Liz Colgan has been a mainstay in goal for Virginia this season and has made 150 saves on the year, also boasting a .462 save percentage and the team’s record.

Hokie Notes

-- Junior Meg Bartley set a new career and team season high against Liberty, scoring six goals in the win.

-- Junior Megan Will broke onto Tech’s all-time scoring list with four goals against Coastal Carolina and the points list with three goals at No. 1 North Carolina. She scored the 100th goal of her career at Old Dominion.

-- Junior Cawley Bromley had a career game at William & Mary, scoring three goals and finishing with four points and made it back-to-back four-point games against Coastal.

-- Against No. 6 Duke, the Hokie defense forced the Blue Devils into a season-high 18 turnovers with their average of 10 coming in the first half, also holding them to a season-low four first-half goals.

-- Entering the week, two Hokies rank among the top 30 in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley ranks the highest of the group, sitting at 13th in the country averaging 5.14 draws per game.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps set a career high with five goals and seven points in the season opener at James Madison.

-- Redshirt senior Julia Heaps became the second Hokie on the 2014 roster to rank among the all-time best as her three assists against High Point broke her onto the list.

-- In this week’s polls, seven of Tech’s opponents are ranked nationally, with another receiving votes.

-- Seniors Julia Heaps, Kelly Naslonski, Lindsay Roche and Becca Niles captain the Hokies this season.

-- Tech welcomed 10 freshmen this season, as well as two new assistant coaches.

The Nation’s Elite

Entering the week of play, two Hokies rank among the top players in the nation in their respective categories. Junior Meg Bartley boasts the highest ranking, as sheis 13th with a 5.14 draws average. Junior Megan Will is 23rd in the country with 56 points this year, while also ranking 28th with 4.00 points per game and 23rd with 39 goals.

Virginia is also represented in the top 30 by two players this week as Courtney Swan ranks in the top 13 in the country in points, draws per game and goals. Goalie Liz Colgan is second in the nation with 150 saves and sixth with 10.00 saves per game.

Record Watch

Junior Meg Bartley has already broken into the all-time top 10, and is tied for second with 184 career draws. She has also made her second notch on the single-seasons draw list, ranking second with 69 last year. She is on pace this season to set a new all-time single season record.

Redshirt senior Julia Heaps broke into the all-time assists list against High Point earlier this year. She currently ranks sixth all-time with 43.

Junior Megan Will’s 42 goals last season landed her on the single-season scoring list, ranking seventh. She broke into the all-time career scoring list against Coastal Carolina and is currently 7th all-time with 111 career goals and 147 career points. Will needs just one asssit to crack the top-10.
