BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell 15-7 to the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field. The Hokies honored the team’s 11 seniors before the game and were led by senior Libby Rosebro, who scored three goals and assisted another. Maryland saw six different players score two goals, and was led by a five-point performance from Alex Aust.

Maryland (17-0, 5-0 ACC) wasted no time getting on the board as Halle Majorana scored less than 30 seconds into the game. The Tech (8-7, 0-5 ACC) defense did not allow the Terps to get anything going after the early goal, as neither team struck again until ten minutes later.

After Maryland got out to 5-0 lead, the Hokies called a timeout and Rosebro responded after the regrouping as she fired in Tech’s first goal of the game midway through the half, attacking the right side.

Nearly five minutes later Rosebro was in on another goal, setting up Megan Will to make it a 6-2 game.

Meg Bartley broke up a three-goal Maryland run when she found the back of the goal on a free position attempt with a minute to go until the half.

At the break Maryland outshot the Hokies 17-10, also winning 10 of the 15 draws.

Maryland again got out to a quick start in the second, putting away a pair of early goals before Brooke Martin sailed in a shot three minutes into the new period. The Terps used a three-goal run to get to a 10-goal difference, but Will struck again midway through the half to break it up.

Rosebro put away back-to-back goals with under ten minutes to play, but the Hokies were unable to get anything going to overcome the difference.

Tech improved in the second half, outshooting Maryland 13-9 and winning five of the eight draws.

Alex Gale logged 40 minutes in goal and received the decision, also making four saves. Alexis Carey replaced her for the final 20 minutes of the game and made one save.

The Hokies will head to the ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C. next week. Play will begin Thursday with two semifinal games. Check back at www.hokiesports.com for more details about the bracket and seeding.
