BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team took down the Longwood Lancers 14-8 at Thompson Field Wednesday evening. Sophomore Megan Will led the Hokies, tying her career high with six goals, while setting a new personal-best eight points. Katie McHugh and Mary Barondess led the Lancers with three goals each.

Both teams got off to a slow start as the first goal came seven minutes in. Brooke Martin got things started for the Hokies (8-5) as she laid one in from the right side off the second Tech shot of the game. After four Hokie shots, Longwood (8-6) tied the game as Sara Jacobson fired one up the middle at the 15:58 mark.

Tech found its rhythm quickly after, notching three-straight goals in four minutes. Will made it a 3-1 ball game off of back-to-back goals in just a minute span. Senior Christina Patten caused a turnover just before the restraining line and took it straight to the cage. Unable to get a look she found Will crashing the goal and the sophomore fired in a quick shot.

The two teams traded goals with 10 minutes remaining in the first, but Tech continued with the momentum and went on a 3-0 run to end the first. The Hokies went into the break with a 7-2 lead and the 8-5 shooting advantage.

The Hokies continued right where they left off as Will notched her fourth goal of the game 30 seconds in the final period. Longwood tried to get things going with back-to-back goals to make it an 8-4 game at the 19:53 mark, but Will continued to dominate as she notched her fifth goal of the game 40 seconds later.

Longwood made it a 9-6 game after two goals in a 30-second span to cause the Hokies to take their first timeout of the game at the 17:54 mark.

After the regrouping, the Hokies took three shots before Martin recorded her third goal of the game, but Longwood responded shortly after to keep the three-goal ball game at the 11:45 mark.

Two minutes later, Will sparked a four-goal Hokie run with her sixth goal of the game to tie her career high. Jack Boissonneault, Kelly Naslonski and Bartley followed Will with the final Tech goals of the game.

Longwood’s final goal came at the 1:39 mark but was not enough to catch the Hokie lead and would end 14-8.

Tech finished the day with a 31-12 shots edge and a 21-15 advantage on ground balls. Patten, who leads the ACC on caused turnovers, finished the game with a career-best four against the Lancers.

Alex Gale got the win for the Hokies and was replaced at the half in goal by Alexis Carey, who played 13 minutes before Hannah Sieger closed out the game. Mollie Zimmerman was in goal for the Lancers and made nine saves in the loss.

The Hokies will return to action Wednesday, April 17, as they travel to in-state rival Virginia for a 7 p.m. game in Charlottesville.
