LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team took down the Liberty Flames 15-6 at the Liberty Lacrosse Field Wednesday evening. Megan Will led the Hokies with five goals, while Nina Dunay paced Liberty with a hat trick.

Will got the Hokies (7-5) out to a hot start as she received the relay off the opening draw put away the game’s first goal 12 seconds into play. Brooke Martin kept things going in the opening minute after causing a turnover on the other end of the field and booking it back to toss in a fast-break pass from Julia Heaps. Martin and Will teamed up on Martin’s next goal and Will added another to force a Liberty (5-7) timeout exactly three minutes into the game.

Production slowed after the regrouping and Liberty eventually got on the board when Dunay put away her first of the day, but the Hokies strung together a four-goal run to give them an 8-1 lead with under eight minutes to play.

Liberty put together a 3-1 run of its own to close out the half, but Tech entered the break with a 9-4 lead and 19-4 shooting advantage.

The Hokies did not get out to quite the quick start that they did in the first half, but that didn’t stop the attack. Will started things off again with 18 minutes remaining in the game when she put a pass from Heaps into the back of the cage. Tech turned that opening goal into a six-goal run that spanned throughout the rest of the second half.

Tech finished the day with a 35-6 shots edge and a 24-12 advantage on ground balls.

Alex Gale got the win for the Hokies and was replaced at the half in goal by Alexis Carey. Kristen Masullo was in goal for the Flames and made 17 saves in the loss.

The Hokies will return to the field on Wednesday, April 10 to host Longwood at Thompson Field at 4 p.m.
