BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team used solid defense and consistent scoring to ease past the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, 16-8, Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field. Megan Will led the Hokies with five points, including four goals, while three other players tallied four points in the game. Rachel Shaw paced the Lady Monarchs with three goals.

Tech (6-4) was the first to strike as Julia Heaps put away a pass from Meg Bartley to put the Hokies on the board six minutes into the game. Five minutes later ODU’s Shaw evened things up with a free position goal.

Three minutes later Tech opened the flood gates, going on a six-goal rally that stretched through the remainder of the first half. Bartley started things off for the Hokies putting away a pass from Libby Rosebro. Will scored her first goal of the game seconds later when she was fouled by the ODU (3-6) goalie, Karen Hayde, and tossed in the easy free position attempt on the empty cage.

Will and Bartley would each add another score during the stretch, while Kelly Naslonski assisted a pair of assists. Brooke Martin also got a goal of her own after assisting a Jack Boissonneault goal earlier in the game.

Kallie McCormick broke up the run with 1:56 left before halftime, but Rosebro made it an 8-2 game heading into the break when she put away a pass from Will.

Tech outshot the Lady Monarchs 11-5 in the first half, also taking the edge on ground balls, 10-7.

The Hokies strung together three-straight goals in the opening ten minutes of the second half, and closed the game with another three-goal run to secure the win and keep the distance. Naslonski capped off her impressive day adding another assist in the second half while also scoring a goal of her own with just under eight minutes left to play.

Naslonski finished the day matching her career-best of four points set earlier this season, by way of three assists and a goal, while Bartley was the opposite, scoring three goals and assisting another to reach the four-point mark for the second time in three games. Rosebro rounded out the trio of four-point performers with two goals and two assists.

Tech saw yet another strong effort from its defensive unit as it held the Lady Monarchs to single-digit scoring, including just two goals in the first half. Christina Patten caused three turnovers for the second straight game, while Kristin Semones added two caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Alex Gale got the win for the Hokies and made eight saves in the game, while Hayde suffered the loss and also made eight saves.

Tech will remain at home and return to conference play next week as it will host top-5 North Carolina on Saturday, March 30 at 2 p.m.
