BLACKSBURG, Va. – A second-half surge just wasn’t enough as the Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell to the No. 20 Boston College Eagles, 15-7, as it returned to conference play at Thompson Field Saturday afternoon. Senior Libby Rosebro led the Hokies with two goals, while Covie Stanwick paced the Eagles with four scores.

Boston College (3-3, 1-0 ACC) got on the board first as Sarah Mannelly scored the game’s first goal less than four minutes into action. It didn’t take long for the Hokies (3-4, 0-2 ACC) to respond as Jessi Thon buried a free position attempt to tie the game up at 1-1 less than 30 seconds later.

The Eagles responded five minutes later when Stanwick put away her first goal of the day on a free position attempt. The Hokie defense put up a strong effort and halted Boston College midway through the half, not allowing it anywhere near the cage or to get anything going, but the Eagles eventually found a crack. The Hokies nearly knocked down a cross-field pass by Boston College, but Mikaela Rix came up with the ground ball and took it straight to the goal to extend the Eagles’ lead.

Boston College tacked on four more unanswered goals by the end of the first half. At the break, the Eagles outshot the Hokies 12-2 and won six of the nine draws in the first session.

To start the second half, Boston College added two goals in the first three minutes of play but the Hokies finally came out of their drought when Brooke Martin put away a pass from Kelly Naslonski as Naslonski flicked the free position opportunity to Martin who was just to the left of the cage and dumped it in.

After a three-goal run from the Eagles, Tech responded with a three-goal run of its own as Naslonski snuck one in after a scrum in front of the Eagles’ goal and Rosebro buried back-to-back shots in less than 20 seconds.

Tech put away two more goals in the final three minutes of the game as Lindsay Roche struck for her first of the year on a pass from Rosebro and Meg Bartley put a pass from Martin in the back of goal, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

The Hokies outshot Boston College 11-8 in the second half, but the Eagles took the advantage for the game, 20-13. After five turnovers in the first half by both teams, the Hokies cleaned their play up and only committed one in the second half, while Boston College matched its first-half total again.

Tech goalie Alex Gale suffered the loss and made three saves on the day in 50 minutes of action, while Alexis Carey saw a brief 10 minutes of playing time as well. Emily Mata picked up the win for the Eagles and made three saves in the game.

The Hokies will return to action on Tuesday, March 12 to take on UC Davis at 5 p.m. Pacific Time as part of a two-game swing in California.
