In the opening round of the ACC Tournament, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell to the Maryland Terrapins, 15-7, at Koskinen Stadium on the Duke University campus. Freshman Megan Will led the Hokies as she was the only player to tally more than one point, finishing the game with three goals. Karri Ellen Johnson paced the Terps with four goals, while Alex Aust set an ACC Tournament record five assists.

Maryland (14-3) came out attacking; putting away two quick goals in the opening minute and a half of the game, but the Hokies (9-7) remained calm and eventually evened things up minutes later.

Senior Morgan Widlake got Tech on the board six minutes into the game. After the goal freshman Meg Bartley won the following draw, helping junior Brooke Martin make it back-to-back goals. Martin created an opportunity for herself after senior Jessica Nonn fed her from beyond the 8-meter.

Maryland struck again four minutes later, but Bartley countered the goal with one of her own after coming from behind the cage and hesitating in front, before finding a gap and capitalizing.

A four-goal run from the Terps would follow the last Hokie goal, but Will was able to end the run when she put away a free position attempt. Three more goals from Maryland would help it to a comfortable 10-4 halftime lead. The Terps also took the shooting edge, 17-6 in the first half, though Tech was nearly perfect, capitalizing on four if its six attempts.

Similar to the game a week prior, both teams were close on the draw, but Maryland took the slight, 9-6 advantage.

The Terps made another impressionable start in the second half, again winning the opening draw and striking within the first minute. Play slowed after the quick score as both teams experienced nearly a ten-minute minute drought in production.

Will tacked on two more goals for the Hokies, scoring two of the three Tech goals in the second half. Junior Libby Rosebro also struck for Tech after putting away a quick pass from senior Ryan Rotanz, but the distance was too large to overcome.

Maryland outshot the Hokies 27-11 in the game and dominated the draw in the second half, ending the game with the 16-8 advantage.

Junior Alex Gale was in cage for the Hokies and neared a season high with six saves in the game. Brittany Dipper played the full 60 minutes in goal for the Terps and tallied four stops.

Tech will conclude the 2012 season and hold Senior Day on Saturday, April 28 as it hosts Columbia. Play will begin at 1 p.m.
