BLACKSBURG, Va. – With a commanding start to the 2012 season, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team claimed a dominant 21-4 victory over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at Thompson Field on the Virginia Tech campus this afternoon. Senior Ryan Rotanz led the Hokie offense with six points, while senior Jessica Nonn led the squad with four goals. Five players earned points for the Blue Hose, while four scored.
This was the first game of the season for both teams as the Hokies begin the year at 1-0 for the seventh time in program history and Presbyterian drops to 0-1 in 2012.
Less than a minute into the action Nonn got things going for the Hokies when she put away a Brooke Martin pass. Just seconds later Martin buried a shot of her own for her first score of the season. Tech scored a total of nine goals in the opening ten minutes, while PC put away just one when Catherine Ellis found the back of the net in the eighth minute.
Tech reached the ten goal differential just after the midway point in the first half when sophomore Lindsay Roche buried a pass from Rotanz.
The Hokies saw impressive play from freshmen Megan Will, who started in her collegiate debut, as well as from Jacqueline Boissonneault. Will finished the first 30 minutes with three goals, while Boissonneault buried two free position shots.
After finishing the first half up 17-1, the Hokies slowed the pace in the second. Junior Kate Sistare was the first to score in the second half, nine minutes into the new period.
The Blue Hose strung together a pair of goals at the midway point in the second half when Kristin Stenoien and Laura Lefeber put away their first scores of the season, but the damage was already done.
Nonn, who is the only Hokie to rank in the career record books at Tech joined her fifth category in the game, as her five points this afternoon broke her into the points list. She already ranks in career goals, draw controls, caused turnovers and ground balls.
Junior Alex Gale got the start in cage for the Hokies and let up just one goal. She finished the game with one save, which came on a denied free position attempt. She was relieved in the second half by classmate Alexis Carey, who allowed three scores and also made one save.
In goal for the Blue Hose was Susan England. She allowed 17 goals and made five stops in 30 minutes of action. Jamie Carlson replaced her in the second half and allowed four goals, also making three saves.
The Hokies return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22 as they host High Point at 4 p.m. in their second of three season-opening home games.
