Martin Family Stad. - 234 Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell to No. 16 William & Mary, 21-8, on Wednesday afternoon at the Martin Family Stadium. The Hokies were led by junior Jessica Nonn with two goals, while six other Tech players also netted goals. Grace Golden paced the Tribe’s offense with five goals.

This was the fourth time this season the Hokies were held to single-digit scoring, while the 21 goals allowed was the most they have let up all year.

The Hokies spearheaded what would be a very evenly-matched first 12 minutes, as they scored 23 seconds into the game when sophomore Julia Heaps found the back of the goal. The Tribe answered with a free position goal from Maggie Anderson 10 seconds later, and another score from Ashley Holofcener to go up 2-1.

Tech responded with two unassisted goals of its own, both coming from Nonn. Nonn took it straight to the goal on the first score and weaved her way through the Tribe defenders after receiving the ball from senior Caitlyn Weir for the second. The pair of scores regained Tech the lead, this time at 3-2.

William & Mary began to take off after Tech’s short run, eventually tallying seven goals over the next ten minutes. Three of those scores came from the Tribe’s leading scorer, Golden.

A free position goal from junior Ryan Rotanz and a score by senior Allie Emala that was assisted by Nonn were attempts to get some kind of run together for the Hokies but the Tribe had an answer for each of the scores and took a 12-5 lead into the halftime break.

Tech again was the first to score to open the second half, when senior Dylan Garner began to crash towards the goal in an effort to bail out Heaps, who was being followed by two Tribe defenders. Heaps connected with Garner, who found the upper right corner of the cage.

Keeping with the first half theme, William & Mary answered the Hokie goal with three of their own. The short run was sparked again by Golden.

Sophomore Brooke Martin broke up the run with her first goal of the day, on an assist from Emala, with just under 15 minutes to go in the game, but the Tribe would not allow the Hokies to build any momentum and went on another scoring streak, this time putting away five in a row.

Though statistically the game looked evenly matched, Tech’s 25 fouls and 24 turnovers cost the team numerous opportunities.

Sophomore Alex Gale was in goal for the Hokies and made seven saves on the say, while Sarah Geary manned the pipes for the Tribe and finished the game with nine stops.

Tech will return to action on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m., hosting Old Dominion at Thompson Field.
