Lacrosse names team captains for 2011
Emala, Garner, Carpenter to lead team.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team recently named its captains for the upcoming 2011 season. Seniors Allie Emala and Dylan Garner, who captained the team last year, were again named the team’s leaders and will be joined by classmate Liz Carpenter. The Hokies have undergone some changes in the offseason as former assistant Megan Burker was named interim head coach for the upcoming year. The returning leadership will benefit the first-year head coach and her newly assembled staff.

Emala led the team last year in draw controls with 88, which helped her set a new all-time Tech record in the category, upping her total to 185. The Baltimore, Md., native also owns the top two spots in single-season draw controls list as her 2010 total ranks first and her 63 as a sophomore is second-best. Emala paced the team’s assists (45) and points (47) lists last season as well.

Garner played in all 17 games for the Hokies last year, making four starts. The Cornelius, N.C., native finished the season tied for fourth with seven assists, while also contributing seven scores for 14 total points.

Carpenter, who suffered a season-ending knee injury 13 games into the year, finished the first part of the season with 10 goals, three assists, 13 points and 19 ground balls. The Lewes, Del., native put away a season-high three goals against then-No. 5 Virginia before her injury.

Tech is in the midst of its fall season, which they opened last weekend at Johns Hopkins. The Hokies return to action this weekend as they host Longwood, Davidson, High Point and Phifer in an all day play day that will go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The team will also put on a clinic on Sunday Oct. 3 at the Mosley Practice Field on the Virginia Tech campus.
