Hokies finish 24th in final AP Top 25

Tech finishes in the top 25 in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2010 and 2011

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech earned a spot in the final AP Top 25 poll for the second consecutive season on Tuesday as the Hokies checked in at No. 24. Tech also finished in the last USA Today Coaches Poll of 2017, coming in at No. 25.

The ranking marks the first time since 2010 and 2011 that Tech has finished in the final AP poll in back-to-back seasons. The Hokies were ranked in every final AP poll between 2004 and 2011.

The 2017 campaign saw the Hokies reach nine-plus victories for the second in as many seasons under head coach Justin Fuente. His 19 wins in his first two seasons in Blacksburg are the most of any head coach in program history.

Fuente is one of just nine active FBS head coaches who have won nine or more games in their first two seasons at their current institutions. When looking at Fuente’s final two seasons at Memphis when won 10 and nine games, respectively, he is one of only six FBS head coaches whose teams have eclipsed nine or more wins over the last four seasons. Fuente is joined in that category by Nick Saban (Alabama), Bryan Harsin (Boise State), Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Urban Meyer (Ohio State) and Mark Richt (Miami).

The Hokies open the 2018 season at Florida State on September 3.
