Edmunds, Saints look to keep their lead in the NFC South

Tremaine Edmunds looks to Join Walter Camp All-American team

The Hokies are always proud to promote the members of the Edmunds family, and we’ve got plenty to tout today. Let’s start with the eldest Edmunds brother, who is a rookie running back for the New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans at Atlanta – 8:25 p.m. ET NBC/NFL Network

RB Trey Edmunds and the New Orleans Saints take on NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons tonight at 8:25 p.m. ET. The game will be televised nationally on NFL Network and NBC. The Saints are currently 9-3 and sit atop their division, while the Falcons are 7-5 and sit just outside of the playoff picture.

The Saints (9-3) are coming of a 31-21 win against the Panthers, a win that gave them sole possession of first place in the NFC South. The Falcons (7-5) are coming off a 14-9 loss to the Vikings (10-2), who would hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC if the playoffs started today.

Edmunds has been a steady contributor this season for the Saints, in large part due to his willingness and ability to play special teams. He has so far tallied five special teams tackles and returned three kickoffs for 65 yards, good for a 21.7 average. Edmunds had his best game of the season in Week 10 against the Bills where he recorded nine carries for 48 yards that was highlighted by a 41-yard touchdown.

Junior linebacker Tremaine Edmunds – the youngest of the three Edmunds brothers – continues to add more postseason accolades to his already impressive resume.

On Thursday morning, The Athletic named Edmunds to their inaugural All-America Team as a second-team selection. That full list can be found here: http://bit.ly/Athletic49.

This evening, Edmunds will be a strong candidate to make the Walter Camp All-American Team that will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards which will air live tonight at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. The foundation continues the tradition by overseeing the selection as voted by the FBS head coaches and sports information directors. Edmunds is seeking to become the first Virginia Tech player to join this prestigious list since CB Kendall Fuller earned a spot on the 2014 Walter Camp Second Team All-America squad.

Edmunds was one of five finalists for the Butkus Award and is one of three finalists for the Dudley Award, which will be presented to the top FBS player in Virginia by the Touchdown Club of Richmond on Sunday evening. The Danville, Virginia native finished the regular season with 102 tackles (55 solo), a figure that ranks eighth among all ACC players. His 14 tackles for loss rank third among ACC linebackers and eighth overall in the ACC. He is also tied for second in the ACC with three forced fumbles.
