Hokies offer condolences to WR Sean Savoy on loss of his brother

Bittersweet day in Blacksburg as freshman named ACC Rookie of Week

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente and the Tech football team were saddened to learn of the death of the older brother of freshman WR Sean Savoy.

“Our hearts go out to Sean and his family on the loss of Omar,” Fuente said. “Sean is a wonderful young man and I know his teammates and the rest of the Virginia Tech community will be there to support him. We ask that Hokies everywhere keep Sean’s family in their prayers during this difficult time as we all extend our deepest condolences to them.”

The Virginia Tech community continues to grieve along with the many families whose lives have been forever impacted in our nation by senseless acts of violence. This latest tragic news comes just after Savoy played a pivotal role in Saturday night’s Tech victory at Boston College.

Savoy caught nine passes for 139 yards and posted a 53-yard touchdown reception in the 23-10 victory over the Eagles. Those figures represented career highs in receptions and receiving yards as he registered the first 100-yard receiving performance of his young career.

The Washington, D.C., native’s receiving yardage total was most in a game for a Tech true freshman since at least 1987, surpassing the most recent Tech true freshman single-game high of 126 receiving yards by WR Josh Morgan vs. Auburn (1/3/05).

Savoy was also named the Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week for his performance against Boston College.
