Hokies visit East Carolina for first road contest of 2017

BLACKSBURG – No. 16 Virginia Tech travels to East Carolina this week for the Hokies' first true road contest of 2017 at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16. The game can be seen on CBS Sports Network.

TECH ON THE ROAD, OTHER TIDBITS VS. ECU
• Tech was 4-1 on the road under Justin Fuente in 2016. Three of those wins were all decided by three points.
• ECU QB Thomas Sirk is a transfer from Duke. Sirk completed 19 of 39 passes for 270 yards with four TDs and no INTs, along with 109 rushing yards as Duke registered a 45-43 win in a 4-OT thriller at Lane Stadium (10/24/15).
• Beamer Ball was in full effect in last year’s contest vs. ECU. Wearing the Beamer No. 25 jersey, CB Greg Stroman registered an 87-yard punt return TD. Virginia Tech also blocked both a FG and a punt in the 54-17 win.
• Stroman enters this week’s game after registering a 61-yard punt return TD in a 27-0 win vs. Delaware (9/9).
KEY STATS TO WATCH ON HOKIES, PIRATES
• Dating back to 2000, the Hokies are 12-3 (.800) on the road against unranked non-conference foes.
• Over that same span Tech is 38-2 (.950) on the road when holding foes to 17 points or less.
• East Carolina has lost 19 straight games when being held to 17 points or less dating back to 2009. That streak includes four losses to Tech (2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016).
• ECU is 0-4 under head coach Scottie Montgomery when being held to 17 points or less.
• Tech is 7-3 in 10 meetings with ECU dating back to 2000. In those seven wins, the Hokies have outscored the Pirates by an average margin of 30.4-14.6 and have held ECU to 10 points or fewer in four of those games.
• Dating back to 2010, ECU is 1-5 against ranked foes, with that lone win coming vs. Tech (9/13/14).
EDMUNDS BROTHERS TURN IN BIG DAY VS. THE BLUE HENS
• Junior LB Tremaine Edmunds led the Hokies’ Lunch Pail Defense in a 27-0 shutout of Delaware on Saturday with a game-high 14 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
• Edmunds’ four tackles behind the line of scrimmage set a new career high and totaled 26 yards for loss.
• His 1.5 sacks matched his personal best and 1.5 of his 4.0 TFL came on third down.
• Edmunds’ second career forced fumble came at 10:18 in the fourth quarter and led to a 24-yard field by Joey Slye that made it 27-0.
• After leading the team with four interceptions in 2016, r-junior S Terrell Edmunds notched his first pick of 2017 vs. Delaware (9/9) and returned it 55 yards.
• Edmunds also posted his first career sack against the Blue Hens.
• It was the longest interception return of his career and it was one of the longest in program history over the last 10 years.
