BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech senior LB Anthony Shegog has earned the distinction of wearing Frank Beamer’s No. 25 for the No. 21 Hokies’ season opener vs. No. 22 West Virginia at FedExField on Sunday.
Sunday’s game will be the Stafford, Va., native’s second time wearing the honorary number in his career. His first time wearing No. 25 came in Tech’s 37-16 Thursday night victory over Miami at Lane Stadium on Oct. 20, 2016.
Shegog turned in a career performance vs. Arkansas in the Belk Bowl where he posted six tackles, a sack, his first career interception and a forced fumble. He finished the season with four passes defended, 22 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss.
At the beginning of last season, head coach Justin Fuente announced that a special teams player of the week would be selected to wear the No. 25 as a tribute to Coach Beamer and his legacy of special teams excellence he spawned for the Hokies.
Fuente also announced the captains for Sunday’s game against West Virginia: C Eric Gallo, LB Andrew Motuapuaka, LB Anthony Shegog and CB Greg Stroman.
In other news, the voice of the Hokies, Jon Laaser, spoke with ESPN college football analyst Brian Griese at Tech practice on Thursday to discuss the rivalry between the Hokies and the Mountaineers and redshirt freshman QB Josh Jackson. Jackson's father, Fred, was the running backs coach at Michigan when Griese played QB for the Wolverines in the mid-90s. Griese will be on the call on Sunday alongside Steve Levy in the broadcast booth for ESPN on ABC.
