Future Notre Dame games set, graduation and more NFL rookie camps

Hokies will open 2036 season at home vs. Irish on Labor Day

BLACKSBURG – The ACC announced four more games in the Virginia Tech-Notre Dame football series on Thursday in addition to the three games already on the schedule between 2018 and 2021. Tech will open the 2036 season (yes, that’s 19 years away) on Sept. 1 at home against Notre Dame. The announcement also included another contest at Lane Stadium in 2028, with road games at Notre Dame in 2027 and 2033.

Notre Dame will make its debut in Blacksburg on Oct. 6, 2018 and will return again Oct. 9, 2021. The Hokies will make their second appearance at Notre Dame Stadium on Nov. 2, 2019.

Virginia Tech overcame a pair of 17-point deficits, as well as cold and windy conditions, to register a 34-31 victory on Nov. 19, 2016 in the first ever football meeting between the two programs.

More NFL rookie mini-camps set this weekend

Jon McLaughlin (Arizona) and Nigel Williams (Buffalo) are among numerous Hokies who are expected to report to NFL rookie mini-camps today, with action getting underway on the practice fields Friday. McLaughlin will wear No. 60 for the Cardinals, while Williams has been assigned No. 93 by the Bills.

Sam Rogers is the only member of Tech’s 2017 NFL Draft Class who didn’t participate in a mini-camp this past weekend. The L.A. Rams will begin on-field work with their rookies Friday.

A.J. Hughes (Pittsburgh) will be competing at the Steelers’ rookie camp with Iowa’s Dillon Kidd, who has been invited on a tryout basis. Other Hokies anticipated to attend camps as undrafted free agents include defensive tackle Woody Baron (Dallas), defensive end Ken Ekanem (Denver) and quarterback Jerod Evans (Philadelphia).

Celebrating Academic Success

Friday will mark graduation at Virginia Tech, and weather permitting, the ceremony will take place at Lane Stadium. Five members of the 2017 squad will receive undergraduate degrees this weekend:

Linebacker Sean Huelskamp (finance)
Nickel defensive back Deon Newsome (residential environments and design)
Offensive tackle Parker Osterloh (environmental science)
Backer Anthony Shegog (communication studies)
Offensive guard Wyatt Teller (property management)

Free safety Der’woun Greene, quarterback Brenden Motley and Ekanem have completed their second undergrad degrees at Tech. Other individuals who were on the roster in 2016 and are expected to receive degrees include:

Cornerback Curtis Williams (building construction & real estate)
Defensive tackle Dalton Roe (mechanical engineering)
Backer Jamieon Moss (creative writing)
