BLACKSBURG – Tech’s quarterbacks combined to throw for 375 yards and three touchdowns, and end J.R. Collins had two sacks and two other tackles for a loss to cap a Virginia Tech football scrimmage on Friday night at Lane Stadium.

Logan Thomas completed 9 of 16 for 214 yards and two touchdowns, while Mark Leal completed 5 of 9 for 132 yards and a touchdown. Ju-Ju Clayton completed 6 of 15 for 39 yards with two interceptions.

Danny Coale and Marcus Davis were the beneficiaries of most of those passes. Coale caught seven for 158 yards and two scores, while Davis caught five for 107 and a score.

The scrimmage was broken into two parts. In the first part, the team worked on special situations – mostly red-zone stuff. During that part, David Wilson scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 18 yards and kicker Cody Journell booted field goals of 27, 30 and 18 yards.

The second part consisted of two 10-minute quarters. In the first quarter, the first-team offense played against the second-team defense, and the second-team offense played the first-team defense. In the second quarter, the first-team units played, with the coaches substituting at times at various positions.

During the second part, Thomas threw touchdown passes of 29 and 43 yards to Coale, and Leal threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Davis. Wilson scored on a 7-yard run. Wilson led all rushers on the evening with 76 yards on eight carries.

Tech’s first-team defense played well, allowing just a lone touchdown in the second part of the scrimmage. Davis’ 70-yarder came after he broke the tackles of Kyle Fuller and Antone Exum on his way into the end zone.

Collins led Tech’s first-team defense with the two sacks and two other tackles for a loss. He finished with seven tackles on the evening. Antoine Hopkins and James Gayle added sacks for the defense as well.

Telvion Clark led all defenders with eight tackles, including two for a loss. Exum had five tackles, including two for a loss. Chase Williams and Brian Laiti had the interceptions.

Journell appears to be edging toward the starting placekicker job. He made four of his five attempts, connecting from 27, 30, 18 and 30 and missing from 46. Justin Myer made a 41-yarder to account for the scoring.

This was the final open scrimmage for the Hokies. The spring game is set for next Saturday, April 23, at 2 p.m.
