Virginia Tech head Athletic Trainer Mike Goforth announced Monday the following injury report updates:
• Offensive lineman Nick Acree suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in yesterday’s mini-scrimmage. The redshirt sophomore from King William, Va., also suffered an MCL sprain and a medial meniscus tear. Goforth said the plan is to do rehab with him, get the swelling out, get his function back and then do surgery in a week or two. The surgery will be done by Dr. Marc Siegel at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg. His recovery time is expected to be around eight months.
• Linebacker Tariq Edwards had a procedure done Sunday at LewisGale Montgomery to remove a proximal screw in his knee to hopefully relieve the pain he’s experiencing after having a rod inserted into his left tibia back in March. He suffered a stress fracture in his shin in the second half of last season. The redshirt junior from Cheraw, S.C., is resting and will begin rehab as soon as possible with the hopes of returning in a week or less.
• David Wang’s ankle injury is not as serious as first expected and the offensive guard is practicing in blue today. He could return to full practice as early as Wednesday and could participate in Saturday’s first full scrimmage if Coach Curt Newsome wants to use him.
• Receiver D.J. Coles continues to improve daily and Goforth feels good about his progress and chances to play against Georgia Tech with exactly three weeks to go before the first game.
• A couple of other players are bothered by hamstring issues and are practicing in blue (limited) today, but it’s nothing that worries Goforth.
The team will practice all week before holding its first open scrimmage on Saturday at 4 p.m. inside Lane Stadium.
