BLACKSBURG – Both the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s cross country teams finished third at the VT Alumni Invite held at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on Tech’s campus Friday evening.
Florida State won the women’s race with 24 points, followed by Ohio (49 points) and the Hokies (74 points). On the men’s side, Akron edged Florida State by a point – 43-42 – followed by Tech with 98 points.
Tech’s top finisher on the women’s side was Hanna Green, who ran unattached in this meet and finished eighth overall. She ran the 6k course in a time of 22 minutes, 00.6 seconds, almost a minute behind Florida State’s Georgia Peel, who won the race with a time of 21:01.34.
The Tech women took five straight spots after Green. Katie Kennedy and Lauren Berman, both running unattached, finished ninth and 10th respectively, followed by Tessa Riley, Abigail Motley and Jennifer Fleming. Kennedy, Berman and Fleming all ran unattached.
Riley, Motley, Shannon Morton, Julie Wiemerslage and Shalonda Mitchell counted toward the Hokies’ team score. Morton finished 18th overall, while Wiemerslage and Mitchell came in 23rd and 41st overall, respectively.
Tech’s top finisher on the men’s side was Stuart Roberson, who came in 14th overall after running the 8K course in a time of 25:10.49, 20 seconds behind winner Zak Seddon of Florida State. Robertson led a pack of Tech runners that finished 14th-19th overall.
Diego Zarate, a freshman running unattached, came in 15th, followed by Thomas Curtin in 16th, Gaige Kern in 17th, Peter Seufer in 18th and Neil Gourley in 19th. Kern, Seufer and Gourley ran unattached.
Robertson, Curtin, Darren Barlow, Daniel Jaskowak and Ashkan Mohammadi counted toward Tech’s team score as the top five finishers. Barlow finished 28th, Jaskowak in 36th and Mohammadi in 37th overall.
Both Tech teams return to action on Oct. 3 when the Hokies participate in the Princeton Invite held in Princeton, New Jersey.
